Filing as a freelancer or contractor should be routine, not a yearly panic. With records kept little and often, a self-employed return becomes a short admin task — and usually reveals money you were leaving behind.

Record as you earn, not in January

Ten minutes a week beats ten hours in a deadline weekend. Photograph receipts, log invoices when you send them and reconcile monthly. When filing season arrives, the return practically writes itself — and nothing gets forgotten.

Claim the everyday costs

Home office use, mileage, tools, software, professional fees and even a slice of phone bills all count. Most self-employed filers we meet under-claim by hundreds because nobody told them what qualifies. A proper expense review pays for itself in year one.

Put the tax aside first

Move a fixed share of every payment into a separate pot the day it lands. When the bill arrives there is no scramble, no borrowing and no late penalties — just a transfer.
